Boy, young China has really gotten good. I have tried a couple of his other books, but I generally gave up on them partway through, because the weird kept on stacking up and tended to get too much for me. But with The City and The City he hooked me all the way to the end. And beyond: I started re-reading the beginning immediately.

I think the trick is that there is a large Weird in this book, but it's introduced gradually and in a narrative anchored with lots of familiar road signs. And it stays the same central odd thing throughout the book, no stacking this time. But a very good central character, a lovely murder mystery, great atmosphere... I think this is the book I am going to plagiarize for NaNoWriMo this year...
