duck for cover- booklog

I have been trying and trying to finish The Yiddish Policemen's Union, but I keep getting stuck, not through any fault of Chabon's - the language is gorgeous and the characters and stories most interesting, but I can't seem to concentrate on it and I keep missing things and getting lost in its dense forest (still haven't progressed past page 100, I think).

But Maps and Legends I finished within days of it arriving here. The book's first impression is brilliant already, with its three layers of pretty, intricately designed dust jackets and the classy black book beneath. It smells good, too (yeah, I know I'm crazy to smell books). And I love Chabon's essays on reading and writing - bite-sized Chabon non-fiction is apparently the perfect thing for me and my currently limited attention span.
