aanvallend spel - thomas rosenboom
Outstandingly lovely and knowledgeable and wonderful lectures about writing and reading. I'm completely biased of course: I once did a writing course taught by Mr Rosenboom, and he is a lovely man who has something nice to say about everybody (and he says it so well, too, the man is a pleasure to listen to, with his upper-class diction and marvellous vocabulary), but also has a ferocious sense or humour. This really is very good. One of my birthday presents (finished the day I got it, today), it's thin but deep and another useful addition to the writing library.
Why do writers have to research their subjects? What does it take to make a succesful protagonist? What is a good plot, and why is it important? Learn Dutch, and Mr Rosenboom will enlighten you. In class, he always quoted Gardner, but I find Rosenboom's lectures much clearer, and much more digestible.
I do wish he'd stop yammering about Madame Bovary, though. As if I need another fat novel added to my reading list...
